TPO/TG Antibodies Test

TSH tests are not conclusive. Thyroid antibodies tests are, therefore, recommended. Thyroid disorders are as a result of autoimmune responses. Autoimmunity can be screened through a blood antibodies test. The presence of thyroid antibodies is proof that the immune system is treating the thyroid gland as an unwanted invader.

Thyroglobulin (TG) antibodies’ test and Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO), antibodies’ test, are used to screen Hashimoto’s disease and other thyroid disorders. Grave’s disease antibodies can also be tested. These test can detect these antibodies a decade, or longer before the TSH levels start decreasing or increasing. In other words, these test can help prevent a thyroid disorder from developing in the future.

The antibodies’ test result may deem a patient out of danger, but in the real sense, the patient has a thyroid disorder. Why? 80% of Hashimoto’s patients have thyroglobulin antibodies figure above 35, and 90% of these patients have TPO antibodies number above 35.

Patients with thyroid antibodies figures above 35 should do everything they can to reduce the value. Otherwise, theirs will be a case of hypothyroidism in less than five years. Thyroid Pharmacist, a website on Thyroid disorders, has a Thyroid Events Amsterdam score test. The score is a prediction on how likely a person is to develop a thyroid problem.

Conventional medicine has it that the more the thyroid antibodies in a patient, the more aggressively the immune system attacks the thyroid glands. But this is not always the case; there are cases of seronegative Hashimoto’s. A patient may not have thyroid antibodies or have thyroid antibodies figure less than 35 and still have the disease.

Thyroid ultrasound scan is a more accurate thyroiditis test. The scan compares changes in the thyroid gland consistent with Hashimoto’s. A thyroid tissue biopsy is a viable test, but it is invasive. A needle is stuck into the thyroid to retrieve cells for comparison with cells consistent with Hashimoto’s. Half of the people whose test come positive after this test had no thyroid antibodies.
